When you enable a strategy in NinjaTrader, its name in the Strategies tab will appear in one of two colors — green or yellow. These colors tell you whether the strategy is operating normally on your account, or whether it's tracking a position that started before you enabled it.
A green strategy name means the strategy is placing real-time orders on your account. This is the state you want — the strategy is ready to trade and any signals that fire from this point forward will execute on your account.
A yellow strategy name means the strategy is currently tracking a historical/virtual position — essentially, the strategy entered a trade before you enabled it on your account, and it's now waiting for that trade to close before it starts placing real-time orders for you.
In plain terms: the strategy is in a trade, but your account is not part of that trade. This typically happens when you enable the strategy mid-session, after a signal has already fired.
The simplest and safest action is to wait. Once the strategy's open (virtual) position closes, it will automatically turn green, and from that point forward the strategy will place real-time orders on your account.
If the strategy only fires once per day — which is common for many Vector strategies — seeing yellow means you missed today's entry window. The best approach is simply to come back the next trading day; the strategy will be green when you start the new session (assuming you refresh your connection and re-enable as usual).
Don't confuse strategy colors with the connection indicator in the bottom-left of the Control Center — that's a separate visual cue. The connection indicator can be green, yellow, orange, or red and reflects the state of your broker/data feed connection (not the state of any strategy).
If your broker connection is red, the strategy can't receive data regardless of its own color.
Strategy names in the Strategies tab are either green (normal, placing real-time orders on your account) or yellow (strategy tracking a pre-existing virtual position, waiting for it to close before syncing to your account). Yellow resolves on its own once the virtual position closes — for strategies that fire only once per day, just come back the next trading day. Connection indicators in the bottom-left of the Control Center are a separate thing — those reflect broker connection state, not strategy state.
