Saving Your NinjaTrader Workspace (and Why It Matters)

Saving Your NinjaTrader Workspace (and Why It Matters)

Category: NinjaTrader Platform | Last Updated: May 2026

What a Workspace Stores

A NinjaTrader workspace is a snapshot of your entire chart-and-strategy setup. It captures:

  • Every chart tab you have open (instrument, timeframe, indicators)
  • Every strategy attached to those charts (and which account each is pointed at)
  • Window layouts, panel positions, and saved settings

If something goes wrong — NinjaTrader crashes, the VPS restarts, you accidentally close a window — reloading a saved workspace puts everything back exactly the way you left it.

CRITICAL: Do not close the NinjaTrader chart window without saving your workspace first. Closing the chart window can lose tabs, strategy attachments, and account selections you've configured. The chart window is the one window you should keep open at all times during the trading day.

Pre-Market Verification Checklist

Before you save the workspace and walk away, run through this short verification on each strategy tab:

CheckWhat to confirm
Correct instrumentFront-month contract (e.g., MNQ June 26), not an expired one.
Correct timeframeMatches what the Settings Spreadsheet specifies for the strategy (most are 15-min).
Correct risk settingsCross-checked against the Settings Spreadsheet for that specific strategy.
Correct trading accountRight-click the strategy → Edit Strategy → confirm the Account field. Especially important when running across multiple prop firm accounts.

To open a strategy's settings: Control Center → right-click the strategy → Edit Strategy. Inside the configuration window, scroll to the Setup section to find the Account selector.

How to Save the Workspace

  1. In the Control Center, go to Workspaces
  2. Click Save Workspace (overwrites the current one) or Save Workspace As… (creates a new named workspace)

If you're on the workspace template the team set up for you (typically named something like VectorAlgo), Save Workspace is what you want — it just writes your current state back to the same workspace.

If you want a separate, named version (e.g., for testing a different layout), use Save Workspace As… and give it a clear name like Vector_test_v2.

Reloading a Saved Workspace

If you ever:

  • Log out of the VPS
  • Disconnect from Remote Desktop
  • Restart NinjaTrader
  • Close the VPS

…you can simply reopen NinjaTrader and load the saved workspace from Workspaces. All your chart tabs, strategies, accounts, and configurations come back exactly as they were saved.

What to Avoid

  • Closing the chart window without saving. The single biggest source of "my setup disappeared" tickets.
  • Leaving the workspace unsaved at the end of the day. If NinjaTrader crashes or the VPS reboots overnight, an unsaved workspace can lose your changes.
  • Closing the entire NinjaTrader application unnecessarily. Inside the VPS, you can minimize or disconnect the Remote Desktop session itself — strategies will keep running on the VPS regardless. Closing NinjaTrader is what forces a reload.

Best Practice Summary

  • ✅ Correct instrument selected
  • ✅ Correct timeframe selected
  • ✅ Correct risk settings applied (per Settings Spreadsheet)
  • ✅ Correct trading account selected on every strategy instance
  • ✅ Workspace saved
  • ✅ Chart window left open

If you're unsure whether your workspace is saved correctly — or want our team to verify the setup before market open — open a support ticket and we'll review it on your VPS directly.
