Understanding Your VPS & Platform Basics

Category: VPS & Infrastructure | Last Updated: April 2026

Your VPS (Virtual Private Server) is the always-on computer that runs NinjaTrader and your Vector strategies 24/7 in the cloud. When you sign up through QuantVPS with the VECTOR code, the VPS comes pre-configured with NinjaTrader and our strategies installed — you just need to connect to it and run a quick daily check that rarely takes more than two minutes (refresh your broker connection, re-enable your strategies, save your workspace if anything changed). Those specific routines are covered in more detail in other articles, but the point is: the day-to-day operational load is light, and doing that small check consistently makes all the difference.

What Is a VPS?

A VPS is a remote computer (a "server") hosted in a data center, running Windows, that you access over the internet. Your trading platform lives there — not on your laptop.

Why trading runs on a VPS and not your own machine:

  • 24/7 uptime — The VPS stays online when your laptop is off, sleeping, or disconnected from Wi-Fi
  • No dependency on your home setup — If your home internet drops during the day, your strategies keep running because they're in the cloud, not on your machine
  • Pre-configured environment — QuantVPS (or V2 Cloud, for some longer-term clients) delivers the VPS with NinjaTrader and Vector strategies already installed; you don't set up the environment yourself

How to Connect to Your VPS

You connect using Remote Desktop (RDP). Once connected, you see the VPS's Windows desktop on your screen and can interact with it like any other computer.

On Windows: 1. Open Remote Desktop Connection (search for it in the Start menu) 2. Enter your VPS IP address 3. Enter the username and password from your VPS provider's welcome email 4. Click Connect

On macOS: 1. Install the Microsoft Remote Desktop (or Windows App, its successor) from the Mac App Store 2. Add a new PC with your VPS IP, username, and password 3. Connect

If you lose your VPS credentials, contact your VPS provider — they can reset access. For trading-side questions on what's running inside the VPS, contact Vector support.

What's Running Inside the VPS

Your VPS is a clean Windows machine set up for one purpose — running your trading platform. You'll see:

  • Windows desktop and taskbar (just like a regular PC)
  • NinjaTrader (pinned, ready to launch)
  • Minimal other software — no browsers, email clients, or personal apps by default

This "clean" setup is deliberate. It keeps the machine stable, reduces what can compete for resources with NinjaTrader, and minimizes attack surface.

Operational Hygiene — What Not to Do

A few things will save you headaches:

  • Don't install random software. The VPS is a dedicated trading machine. Installing browsers, messengers, games, or other apps creates instability and can slow NinjaTrader down.
  • Don't use it as a regular computer. Avoid browsing the web, checking email, or downloading files on the VPS. It's a trading environment, not a personal workspace.
  • Don't shut it down carelessly. The VPS should stay running. If you need to restart, do it deliberately and outside of active market hours.

When to Contact Which Support

Different issues go to different teams — knowing which one will save you time:

VPS-level issues (can't connect, password reset, disk/memory issues, VPS billing): - QuantVPSContact QuantVPS Support · Help Center - V2 Cloud (for older clients) → Contact V2 Cloud · Help Center

Strategy and platform issues (NinjaTrader errors, Vector strategies behaving unexpectedly, strategy updates): - Vector support → Open a support ticket

When in doubt, open a Vector ticket first and our team will route you to the right place.

Bottom Line

Your VPS is a pre-configured Windows machine in the cloud that runs NinjaTrader and your Vector strategies 24/7. Access it via Remote Desktop using the credentials from your VPS provider, keep it clean (no personal software, no browsing), and do the two-minute daily check to keep things running smoothly. For VPS-level issues, contact QuantVPS or V2 Cloud directly; for strategy or Vector-side issues, open a Vector support ticket.
