What Does It Mean When My Prop Firm Account Is Set to Liquidation Only?

Category: Prop Firm Trading | Last Updated: April 2026

Liquidation Only is a status your prop firm can apply to your account that restricts it to closing existing positions only — you cannot open new trades. It's a protective/procedural state applied by the firm, not by Vector or by NinjaTrader.

Common Reasons a Firm Sets an Account to Liquidation Only

Different firms have different triggers, but the typical causes include:

  • Trailing drawdown limit reached. Account balance dropped to or below the firm's trailing drawdown threshold.
  • Daily loss limit hit. Some firms enforce a max daily loss; reaching it may restrict further trading for the rest of the day.
  • Rule violation. Trading outside allowed hours, holding over a weekend, exceeding position sizing limits, or other firm-specific rule breaches.
  • End of evaluation period. If your evaluation has expired or passed into a review state, the firm may set the account to liquidation only while reviewing.

The exact triggers and what happens next are defined by your prop firm. Vector does not interpret these rules.

What to Do

  1. Log into your prop firm's dashboard and check account status, notifications, and any details the firm has posted about why the restriction was applied.
  2. Contact your prop firm's support directly if the reason isn't clear, or if you believe the status was set in error. They're the authoritative source on the cause and the path forward (reset, rebate, new evaluation, etc. — depends on the firm and your plan).
  3. Disable the strategy in NinjaTrader for that specific account to prevent NinjaTrader from generating error messages as the strategy attempts to place orders that the firm will reject.

Bottom Line

Liquidation Only means your prop firm has locked your account to close-only — existing positions can be exited, but no new ones can be opened. The reason and the next step are always firm-specific, so contact the firm directly. On your end, disable the strategy for that account in NinjaTrader to keep the Log tab clean while you sort it out with the firm.
