Should I run algorithms during holidays or low-volume periods?

Category: Trading Operations | Last Updated: April 2026

Whether to run algorithms during holidays, year-end, or other low-volume periods is a common question. Vector Algorithmics does not provide financial or trading advice, and every client is free to make their own decisions about how and when to run their accounts. What we do share openly is which periods we've observed to be unfavorable for our strategies — driven by thin volume and low market participation — and we pause our strategies on our end during those windows accordingly.

When Vector Pauses Strategies

Around major holidays (Christmas, New Year's, Thanksgiving, and other significant market events), Vector Algorithmics may choose to pause our strategies. This also includes half-day sessions — days when the market closes early (e.g., the day before Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, the day after Thanksgiving) are typically paused on our end due to the thinner, less representative order flow during the shortened session.

When a pause is scheduled, we publish an announcement in advance through the official Discord #announcements channel so every client has time to adjust. The announcement will include the date range and the "back to normal" notice will follow once the pause period ends.

Holidays: Full Closures vs. Half-Days

  • Full market holidays: Exchanges are closed. No strategy will fire because there's no data or order routing.
  • Half-days: Markets close early and volume is typically thinner. Vector pauses our strategies on these days; an announcement will be posted in advance on Discord #announcements.

For the official exchange calendar (full closures, half-days, and regular sessions), CME Group publishes the schedule each year.

Low-Volume Periods

The last two weeks of December — and other known low-volume stretches around major holidays — tend to carry thinner order flow and less consistent market behavior. Vector does not issue trading recommendations for these periods, but we will notify you in the Discord #announcements channel if we decide to pause any of our strategies during them.

Our Recommendation

Every client is free to run their account as they see fit. That said, we strongly recommend following the guidance published in Discord #announcements — it reflects when Vector has chosen to stand aside, and clients who align with our announced pauses are operating the system the way it was designed to be run.

  • Follow the Discord #announcements channel for pauses, resumes, and operational updates.
  • If you're unsure whether a pause is currently in effect, open a support ticket and a team member will confirm the current operational status for you.

Bottom Line

What Vector announces, essentially, are the periods during which our strategies have demonstrably underperformed — driven by thin volume and low market participation typical of major holidays and half-day sessions. These announcements are published in the Discord #announcements channel so every client has visibility into when we're standing aside. When in doubt, check Discord first; if the answer isn't there, open a support ticket.
